| | Family Centered Care
Family centered care supports the concept that the “family” is defined by the childbearing woman. Women are encouraged to be active participants in their pregnancy and in the planning and preparation for their birth. Partners or support people are welcome in the birth experience.
We seek to inform all pregnant women about the advantages of breastfeeding and provide an optimal environment for breastfeeding. We are committed to educating our staff to assist women to breastfeed successfully.
Our philosophy also promotes the ability for the mother and baby to stay together throughout their hospital stay. This is called rooming in. It is an excellent way for mothers and other family members to learn about their baby’s unique personality, identify feeding cues and to feel more comfortable caring for their baby before they go home. Rooming in encourages babies to be fed on demand when feeding cues are just starting because they are close at hand. When breastfed babies are fed on demand, milk supply is established faster. There are also several other benefits to rooming in:
- Babies cry less when they are with their parents.
- Parents are readily available to meet their baby’s needs.
- Babies sleep better in a quiet room with their parents.
- Parents sleep better when their babies are nearby, and they are the preferred care provider for their infants.
Our nursing staff is available to help with all of your baby's care as needed throughout your hospital stay.
In keeping with our philosophy of family centered care, the nursing staff practices mother-baby care which means that the same nurse that cares for the mother cares for her baby. |
