Pain medicine is the most recent addition to the Neuroscience Center at Gundersen Lutheran. Pain medicine experts evaluate and treat acute and complex chronic pain syndromes from myofascial disorders (musculoskeletal strains and sprains) to cancer pain.
Individualized treatment plans are based on:
- Psychological evaluation (counseling, biofeedback, relaxation and other types of self regulating therapies)
- Physical medicine evaluation (enhance function and improve quality of life)
Treatment plans may combine physical therapy, to enhance function and to improve reconditioning, with interventional techniques such as:
- Injections (epidural steroids, nerve, sympathetic and facet nerve blockade)
- Spinal cord stimulation (post laminectomy syndrome, spinal stenosis, complex regional pain syndrome, chronic refractory angina)
- Radiofrequency ablation of facet joints and other nerve structures
- Intrathecal drug delivery (cancer pain, patients intolerant of the side effects of oral medications)
Education and research are woven together to provide optimal, state-of-the-art, and evidenced-based patient care. |
