Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery Residency Overview

La Crosse, WisconsinThe four year Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery Residency Program at Gundersen Lutheran in La Crosse, Wis., is a mixture of outpatient and inpatient experiences that closely resemble the contemporary practice of oral surgeons. It offers primary care and tertiary care opportunities. Graduates of the program are very well prepared for independent practice.

Since there are no Otolaryngology or Plastic Surgery residents, the Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery residents have the opportunity to work closely with and learn from the other head and neck specialists. General Surgery and Medicine rotations are on to highly respected services. One of the strongest aspects of the program is the training and experience in anesthesia.

The program’s exceptional success rate on the Board Certification examination reflects the quality of the residents from the program, the training and education opportunities at Gundersen Lutheran and the commitment of the faculty to residency training and education. There is a close working relationship between the attending staff and residents. Education occurs within a congenial and supportive environment.

The Stenger Oral Surgery Learning Center within the Oral and Maxillofacial clinical area offers a state-of-the-art environment for residency education. Each resident has his or her own workspace. There is an extensive library available within the Stenger Center and the hospital library, which has 24 hour access.

The four year Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery Residency Program at Gundersen Lutheran is a non-degree program, fully accredited by the Commission on Dental Accreditation. Graduates of the program are eligible to become diplomates of the American Board of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery. The benefits that Gundersen Lutheran provides along with living in the La Crosse area are conducive to a positive environment for residency training.
