| | Therapist Internship
Gundersen Lutheran’s Behavioral Health department offers a therapist internship for students from the University of Minnesota MSW program, Winona State Community counseling program, and Stout Marriage and Family Therapy program. Therapist Interns will get an excellent experience in a hospital/clinic based outpatient behavioral health setting. They will have opportunity to work with psychologists, psychiatrists and therapists with a wide variety of experience, training and specialties. Gundersen Lutheran is a teaching institution that values the student intern and their work. This internship offers a realistic experience for those hoping to provide psychotherapy in an outpatient setting. The staff at Gundersen Lutheran will work to ensure that the intern gets an excellent experience focused on developing the skills necessary for licensure and practice.
Interns will provide group and individual therapy, including; assessment, diagnosis, treatment planning and documentation, as well as develop and implement a psycho-education group. Interns may also have the opportunity to work on special projects identified during the course of their internship.
Position Qualifications
Education/Learning Experience
Required: Bachelors degree in Social work, psychology or related field. Completion of all classroom coursework in Masters program in Social Work, Counseling, Marriage and Family Therapy or other clinical mental health program. Registered in Internship for same program.
Work Experience
Desired: Previous experience in the mental health field.
Skills/Knowledge
Required: Interviewing and relationship building skills, DSM IV diagnosis, individualized goal oriented treatment planning, Case conceptualization ability, Basic knowledge of CBT and one or two other theories of counseling. Knowledge of professional code of ethics.
Desired: Knowledge of motivational interviewing, Prochaska’s stages of change, interpersonal and psychodynamic theories.
Next Steps
Only one intern will be accepted per academic year. Applicants must have all core classes completed prior to application and be enrolled in the internship (or equivalent) class in the program. The internship will run for 9 to 12 months. The intern will work Monday through Wednesday at various locations in the La Crosse area for a total of 20-24 hours.
