Minimally Invasive Bariatric Surgery and Advanced Laparoscopy Fellowship Overview

The Department of General Surgery of the Gundersen Lutheran Health System is offering a fully funded one-year post residency fellowship in minimally invasive bariatric surgery and advanced laparoscopy. This fellowship is accredited by the Fellowship Council.

This fellowship will provide extensive experience in the surgical management of morbid obesity with emphasis on laparoscopic Roux-en-Y gastric bypass. The fellow will be exposed to a multitude of other advanced laparoscopic procedures, such as laparoscopic antireflux surgery, laparoscopic colectomy, solid organ surgery, hernia surgery, thoracoscopy and also the da Vinci S Surgical System.

Photo of Shanu Kothari, MD, (left) with the first minimally invasive bariatric surgery fellow, Michael David Lara, MD (2003-2004).The fellow will be involved in the comprehensive preoperative assessment of all new bariatric patients, scrub on all bariatric procedures and be involved in the postoperative management and follow-up of these patients. The fellow will participate in resident education and teach skill acquisition to the general surgery residents in the training lab. The fellow will be required to participate in research activities during the course of the year.

The Division of Minimally Invasive Bariatric Surgery provides a comprehensive multi-disciplinary approach to the bariatric patient. The team includes a physician assistant, three registered dietitians, a clinical coordinator, as well as psychiatrists, psychologists, and plastic surgeons. The American Society for Metabolic and Bariatric Surgery (ASMBS) named the Bariatric Surgery Clinic a Center of Excellence.               Upon completion of the fellowship, the fellow will be well prepared to establish a proper minimally invasive bariatric surgery program in an academic or private practice environment. Applicants should be board eligible or board certified in general surgery and have completed an accredited general surgery program at the time of application.
