Gundersen Lutheran has been providing excellence in health care for over 100 years. We are pioneers in multiple areas and have recently received several distinguished honors. We were rated the most efficient in the State of Wisconsin based on data compiled from 1996 to 1998. In 1998 Gundersen Lutheran was also ranked as one of Top 100 Healthcare Institutions in the nation. In 1999, we were named as one of the Top 100 Heart Care Hospitals in the nation. We serve approximately one-half million patients from 19 counties and 3 states.
In 1996, Gundersen Lutheran was designated the Western Clinical Campus of the University of Wisconsin-Madison Medical School. More than 150 UW medical students take part of their instruction at our campus each year. We offer third and fourth year medical students a wide range of clerkship opportunities.
The nursing and ancillary staff have excellent working rapport with the residents, such that cheerful, collegial relationships are the norm, making a very enjoyable working atmosphere.
"There is an excellent relationship between residents and the nursing and other staff. They are very friendly and helpful, which is especially important in the first few months of residency. The Social Workers are phenomenal! All you have to do is ask for nursing home placement, and in a very short amount of time everything (paperwork, insurance, transportation, etc.) is ready for you to facilitate timely discharge." — Jon Zlabek, Internal Medicine Staff Physician, Former Chief Resident, 2000-2001
In an effort to provide an academic environment where education and patient care can be the priority, we are fully staffed, 24 hours a day, 7 days a week for the following ancillary support, as well as numerous other services:
- Venipuncture
- Arterial puncture
- EKG
- Respiratory Therapy
- Patient Transport
- Pharmacy
- Social Workers
- Radiology/Ultrasound Technicians
The patient medical record is available in both electronic and paper forms. Our web-based medical record system has clinic records, hospital H&P and discharge summaries, current and past medicines, medical problems, patient letters, radiology reports, EKG's, pathology and laboratory values all on one, easy to use system. The Clinical Laboratories, are available 24 hours a day and perform 1.5 million tests annually. Laboratory collection and testing services are provided at La Crosse and at 23 regional clinic locations. More than 200 trained laboratory professionals provide a full range of laboratory services. Both Clinical and Anatomic Pathology services are available; these include Virology, Microbiology, Transfusion Medicine, Hematology, Clinical Chemistry, Flow Cytometry, Immunology, Histology, and Cytology testing. Laboratory test results are delivered electronically to the patient's medical record for ease of access by the caregiver. All laboratory services are accredited by the College of American Pathologists.
The Radiology Department performs more than 11,000 examinations each year with MRI, CT, two catheterization laboratories, ultrasound (including transvaginal) and nuclear medicine's computer tomography camera (SPECT). The radiology staff performs a wide variety of interventional procedures, including percutaneous nephrostomy, percutaneous renal stone removal, transluminal angioplasty, percutaneous abscess drainage, and stereotactic biopsies. In addition, radiologists provide specialty services to clinics and hospitals throughout the clinic/hospital's 19-county service area. Radiology reports are available immediately after interpretation via a computerized phone line and are put on the web-based medical record system shortly thereafter.
