Superior Cancer Care

Experience Matters...Outcomes Matter

The outcomes for patients treated at Gundersen Lutheran’s Center for Cancer & Blood Disorders compare favorably with other leading cancer centers. This is according to the most recent (2000) report for five-year survival rates as provided by the National Cancer Data Base (NCDB)*. This is a nationwide oncology database of more than 1,400 commission-approved cancer programs including leading cancer centers such as:
  • Memorial Sloan-Kettering Cancer Center, New York, N.Y.
  • University of Texas M.D. Anderson Cancer Center, Houston, Texas
  • Good Samaritan Hospital Medical Center, West Islip, N.Y.
  • New York-Presbyterian Hospital, Columbia Weill Cornell Cancer Center, New York, N.Y.
  • Mayo Clinic Cancer Center, Rochester, Minn.
Compare our numbers and you’ll see that Gundersen Lutheran is a proven leader in superior cancer care.

Breast
For stage 0 (non-invasive), stage 1 and even stage 2 breast cancer, the five-year survival rates for patients treated at Gundersen Lutheran are 85 to 97 percent! This is up to 6 percent above the national benchmark. Click here for statistical data.

Lung
Gundersen Lutheran is working hard to raise the survival rates of lung cancer by raising awareness and leading research. Our efforts have resulted in a survival rate that equals or beats the national benchmark for five-year survival by up to 33 percent. Click here for statistical data.

Colorectal
Thanks to an increase in screening, we are treating more and more colorectal cancer in its earliest, non-invasive stage (stage 0) leading to a five-year survival rate of 100 percent—27 percent higher than the national benchmark! Even in the later stages, Gundersen Lutheran surpasses the national benchmark by as much as 17 percent. Click here for statistical data.

Prostate
Gundersen Lutheran has tremendous success in treating prostate cancer with a 100 percent five-year survival rate for stage 3 patients compared to the national benchmark of 86 percent! Click here for statistical data.
