Recently, I had a bad oncology day. As a radiation oncologist, I have these periodically…where I witness a patient’s inordinate struggle. I was asked to consult about a patient who came to Gundersen Lutheran for her backache. Because of a fall, she thought her back pain was from an injury. This patient was treated a year earlier for breast cancer, and unfortunately, her backache was much more than an injury.

‘Other than the bruises, I felt fine’
Tannis Steinberg of
Lewiston, Minn., never had serious health problems. So, you can imagine
the 29-year-old’s dismay when she developed bruises all over her body
for no apparent reason. A blood test soon revealed that Tannis
had a non-cancerous blood disorder, known as ITP, caused by her own
immune system attacking and destroying her platelets.
