Infectious diseases are caused by germs. The germs can be bacterial, viral, fungal, or protozoan. You can get infected by a germ through touching, eating, drinking or breathing. Most infections can be treated by your primary care provider, but complex infections are treated in Gundersen Lutheran’s Infectious Disease department.

Infectious disease is a sub-specialty of Internal Medicine. Some of the infections they treat include:

• Lyme disease
• Fungal infections
• Parasitic infections
• Bacterial infections
• Viral infections:
  • Hepatitis A, B, & C
  • HIV

Infectious Disease physicians also treat patients who have compromised immune systems, such as patients with Leukemia, organ transplant recipients, and patients with AIDS. The physicians also commonly see patients for:

• Outdoor related infections
• Treating wounds
• Preparing for foreign travel
• Immunizations
• Outpatient intravenous/infusion therapies for difficult to treat infections
• Healthcare associated infections such as:
  • Infections of surgical wounds
  • Pneumonia
  • Urinary infections

Gundersen Lutheran’s infectious disease department is also active in research for the diagnosis and treatment of Lyme disease and other tickborne diseases, infections in pregnancy and hospital acquired infections.
