PRK is similar to LASIK. Both procedures use the excimer laser to reshape the cornea and change its focus. However, this laser procedure is not done under a flap like LASIK. Instead, the treatment is done on the surface of the cornea.
PRK is less common than LASIK because there is a lengthier healing process and more discomfort. Vision recovery can take up to one to two weeks and eye drops are often required for several months after the procedure. The most common reason to have PRK instead of LASIK is surface disease of the cornea. It makes LASIK not heal as well.
