Hemodialysis is used to treat people with kidney failure. It cleans the blood and removes wastes and excess fluids from the body, usually the function of healthy kidneys. The blood is routed and filtered through an artificial kidney or dialyzer. The clean blood is then returned to the body. Removing harmful wastes, and excess salt and fluids helps regulate blood pressure and chemicals such as potassium and sodium.

Dialysis at a Gundersen Lutheran Facilities
Gundersen Lutheran in La Crosse is the main chronic outpatient hemodialysis unit and the only acute dialysis program in the area, providing dialysis services for Hospital inpatients 24/7.

All new dialysis patients start treatments in La Crosse so they can be observed near acute care facilities in case they experience problems. Patients who are chronically unstable continue to have dialysis in La Crosse.

Stable patients are transferred after about two weeks to Onalaska or another regional unit in Tomah, Viroqua, Prairie du Chien or Black River Falls. Patients at regional units who develop complications return to La Crosse until their condition improves.

Most patients receiving dialysis must come to one of Gundersen Lutheran’s Outpatient Dialysis Centers three times a week for three to five hours each visit.
