More than half of men over the age of 60 will develop an enlarged prostate during their life. It’s a condition known as benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH) and it leads to difficulties with urination. Urologists at Gundersen Lutheran can treat this condition. One of the treatments is a new laser technology.
Scientists have not been able to pinpoint a cause of BPH, but they do know it happens as a natural process of aging and imbalances in testosterone. The condition develops after the prostate gland grows and excess tissue puts pressure on the urethra. Patients often develop an increased frequency and urgency to urinate, slow stream and difficulty starting urination or a combination of these symptoms.
Prescription medications can offer a temporary fix and often come with side effects. But, a new technology is offering many patients a long-term solution with few risks. Gundersen Lutheran urologists are using a laser technology called GreenLight PVP. Compared to the traditional surgical method called TURP (transurethral prostatic resection), GreenLight PVP uses a minimally invasive, high-powered laser to vaporize excess tissue.
