Physical Therapy
Contact
Physical Therapists are experts in evaluation and treatment of injury or disease in the musculoskeletal system. They help patients decrease pain and return to their maximal level of function by exercise, posture instruction, body mechanics training, joint and soft tissue mobilization as well as use of pain-relieving modalities such as ultrasound and iontophoresis. They work closely with the physicians and patients, encouraging patients to play an active role in his/her rehabilitation. Physical Therapists also teach injury prevention and promote health, wellness and fitness.
Physical therapists require a physician referral.
At Gundersen Lutheran our Outpatient Physical Therapy team of over 45 members is located at three facilities in the La Crosse area.
Our therapy outcomes demonstrate a high standard of care, and our team has specialty training in areas such as women’s health, industrial rehabilitation, osteoporosis, aquatic therapy, therapeutic exercise, and mechanical diagnosis and therapy. We also have Physical Therapists and Physical Therapy Assistants trained in the McKenzie Method of evaluating and treating neck and back pain. Our Physical Therapists in the pelvic floor specialty are also trained in evaluating and treating pediatric patients with incontinence. Our high standards in staff continuing education and professional development keep us abreast of the latest practice advances.
Some examples of diagnoses we commonly treat, but are not limited to, include:
- Orthopaedic injuries, including post-surgical
- Whiplash and other injuries resulting from motor vehicle accidents
- Neck and low back pain
- Headaches
- Fibromyalgia
- Balance and gait disorders
- Tendonitis and bursitis; muscle, joint and ligament injuries
- Spine problems related to discs, joints or arthritis
We strive to develop and maintain good relationships with all members of our patients' healthcare team. Our patients benefit from ongoing communication as we work closely with their physician(s) and other healthcare providers (including occupational therapists, physician assistants and nurses). We are involved in several interdisciplinary team efforts including industrial rehabilitation, incontinence and pelvic pain, cancer support and osteoporosis.
Our therapy team strives for customer satisfaction, and we prioritize patient measurement of our success. To ensure that our patients' satisfaction and functional outcomes are the best that they can be, we use a self-assessment survey tool. Patients are encouraged at regular intervals to give feedback regarding satisfaction with therapy services and their progress. Therapists review this feedback and use it to make treatment adjustments as necessary.
