Snoring Procedure

Snoring can be a sleep-disrupting problem for couples. There are several options for treatment. One new option is available from Gundersen Lutheran otolaryngologists. An operation called the “Pillaring Procedure” is done under local anesthesia in an outpatient setting. The doctor places three 2-inch woven inserts into the muscle of the soft palate. The inserts are spaced so as to stiffen the soft palate to keep it from relaxing and then vibrating during sleep. This alone can reduce or eliminate snoring. The operation is not a complicated one. It can be completed in 30 to 45 minutes, with the patient going home fterward. The inserts cause no discomfort and remain in position permanently. It should be noted that most insurance providers consider isolated snoring a social issue.

This procedure is also a possible treatment for mild sleep apnea. Sleep apnea is a medical condition that should be evaluated prior to having this procedure. Because snoring is such a common problem, doctors anticipate that as people become aware of the procedure, the number of patients who choose to undergo the operation will steadily increase.
