Automatic Implantable Cardiac Defibrillator

Patients who are at risk for sudden cardiac death may need an automatic implantable cardiac defibrillator. This device, much like a pacemaker, only slightly larger, senses dangerous heartbeats and can then deliver a shock to the heart to return it to a normal rhythm.

The unit is implanted into the patient's upper chest. Attached wires are fed through a large blood vessel into the heart. General anesthesia is required for the implant procedure. The patient should anticipate an overnight stay in the hospital for this procedure.

Regular follow up visits to the pacemaker clinic are scheduled to test AICD functioning.
